Hamish Clark
Director & Senior Adviser, CFP® / BBus (FPL) / Aged Care Specialist / Financial Adviser of the Year Finalist (2018 Young Leaders in Finance Awards)

Financial Advice is all about people – building and growing relationships and helping them make the most out of today and make a better tomorrow. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to develop a relationship with clients, understanding who they are and what they want and then taking them on that journey through our advisory relationship.

I listen to clients and work to grow a trusting relationship, whilst developing a strong understanding of their lifestyle, goals and needs. I then show them how to achieve dreams that they didn’t know were possible. Asking the right questions to uncover their personality and how they use and respect money is critical to developing the right financial strategy and plan for them, including all the tangible strategic benefits of minimizing tax, maximizing short and long term income and sustainably building or retaining wealth. From there it’s about maintaining the relationship, helping them stay on track to realise their goals in the long run.

Away from work, I’m a big people person and love spending quality time with my wife and two daughters with our family and friends. When not at home, you’ll often find us at the cellar door of new wineries or craft breweries or staying active on long walks/hikes. Other than that, I’m still hoping for the Dees to finally make another AFL Premiership!

James Taylor
Director & Senior Adviser, CFP® / Grad,Dip (Financial Planning) / BBus (Eco/Finance)

I founded the financial planning arm of Choice Capital back in 2005 after a long career in Big 4 bank world. Like Christian from Beulah, my goal has always been to build a full suite financial services firm, so given the long working history and how well the culture of the two teams clearly aligned, the merge was a natural progression.

Although my main focus is now on building the business and developing the team leaders, I still look after a core group of clients to ensure my perspective and advice style stays relevant. This is a fast-moving industry and I’m excited to drive our growing team forward and improve our client experience. From our wealth portal app to our digital tap and save business cards, we’re always looking for ways to enhance our tech stack and become early adopters of new technology.

For me this is the best job in the world, no two days are ever the same as no two clients are the same. Helping people formulate a financial path forward, and seeing the benefits over time is what it’s all about. This is a challenging but ultimately rewarding profession where people place their trust in us, and we work hard to ensure we repay that faith with financial certainty and peace of mind.

As well as staying on top of strategies, products and regulatory changes, the real key to success is having a deep understanding of the clients ultimate goals and often helping them understand what those goals look like. This is achieved through asking the right questions, and actually listening to the answers!

Away from work, I’m generally still thinking about work – but that’s the price you pay for running a business! Aside from work, I’m generally training for the next endurance event. Having already completed the Melbourne Ironman, North Face 50km trail run and Three Peaks 235K bike ride, I’m always on the lookout for the next challenge both personally and professionally.

Wilson Chen
Adviser, BA (Eco/Politics) / Ad.Dip.FP

I believe good financial advice is empowering and life-changing and my enjoyment come from working with clients to find practical, tailored solutions that work for them. I think most people want to contribute a little bit in an altruistic way and advising is my avenue to do so! That’s why I do it.

My approach is to make sure I’m an expert, taking the time to listen and then giving my clients the tools to make informed decisions. I also work very closely with our team to always look at better ways to improve the experience we provide to our clients. Implementing the new Wealth Management app has been one of my most fulfilling achievements since joining the team.

I’m a naturally curious person so what I end up doing in my spare time is usually dictated by this curiosity! I’ve completed a couple of solo-travelling adventures and definitely plan on going on more in the future. Away from travels or the office, I’m with mates or on my bike.

Fatuma Akalo
Associate Adviser, MappFin / BBus (Eco/Finance)

I joined the team in 2020 following over 13 years of experience within the boutique financial planning space. I’ve worked closely with HNW and UHN clients over that time, as well as SMSF trustees/members and other various entities.

I pride myself on bringing extensive technical knowledge and holistic advice construction to our Senior team. I’m passionate about educating and empowering clients with the knowledge to help them make informed financial decisions.

In my spare time, I’m an avid traveller having visited almost 20 countries….and counting!

William Phillips
Associate, BBus (Banking & Finance) / Dip.FP

I have always wanted to help people reach their financial goals and the fact that every client is different keeps my role interesting and challenging. There is nothing better than financial peace of mind, and doing all I can to help people get there has motivated me since joining the team in 2018. Having an experienced team to learn from is the key to success and achieving the best outcome for our clients, so I work hard to continually improve my knowledge.

Born and raised in Melbourne, I believe I will always call it home, however, I love to travel and believe it’s so important to experience as much of our world as possible. Staying fit and healthy is also very important and as well as playing cricket, on the weekends you’ll find my partner and I exploring our beautiful state, hitting the gym and hanging with friends at every chance we get.

Nicola Murray
Client Services, BCom (eco) / BA

I joined the team in February 2021 after completing my Bachelor of Commerce/Arts at Monash University. Working in client services, I pride myself on providing the best service possible for our clients and taking care of the wider team too.
With a strong interest in financial planning, and a desire to become an adviser in the future, I am thoroughly enjoying working with, and learning from our financial planning team.
Like most of the team, in my spare time, I love to dine out with friends, bake for our team’s exclusive “chocolate club”, and go for long walks.

Shaun Guzzo
Financial Adviser, BBus (Financial Planning)

In year 11 Economics I had an assignment to give Russell Crowe financial planning advice. The assignment was enjoyable and to my excitement, I received an A++ and a message from my teacher –  ‘Well done Shaun, maybe a career in Financial Planning is in your future”. From that point, I was hooked, and I took the advice of my teacher.

Great financial planning begins with building a strong long-term relationship with clients, helping them understand what drives their goals, formulating a plan and helping them stay on track. For me, there is nothing more fulfilling than helping people; whether that be helping a young client with setting up a savings plan to purchase their first home, a young family saving for their kids’ education and protecting their income from unforeseen sickness or injuries, a pre-retiree maximizing their position for retirement or helping a pensioner as they transition into age care.

When I’m not helping clients reach their goals, I’m working on reaching my own. My downtime is spent writing my next novel, trying out the newest hidden cocktail lounge in the city with friends, or playing with Lego with my two nephews.

Angus Tyers
Financial Advisor, Grad. Dip (CA), BCom, • Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (CAANZ)

Before becoming a Financial Adviser, I spent 5 years working extensively as a Chartered Accountant with both family offices and Big 4 accounting firms.
I worked closely with families on their group tax structures, SMSFs and transition of wealth strategies which included advice on preferred restructuring and governance solutions (e.g. responsibilities of trustees or directors within a structure).

I focus on using these skills to advise our high net worth clients on building and protecting the wealth they have earned.
I also work closely with our finance and wealth management teams to advise on the best solutions for structure, finance and asset selection in their financial strategies.

Outside of the office I participate in rowing and am still involved at the Melbourne University Boat Club. My wife and I recently had our first child, whom I’ll ensure will also be an avid Demons supporter.
